The RX-8 has been recalled twice. First up, the fuel pump pipes in certain 2004-2008 model years can crack due to heat from the engine and the exhaust.
A Smaller, but Still Dangerous Recall ∞

Mazda is also recalling over 34,000 of its 2004 RX-8s with ball joint sockets in the front suspension that can crack, resulting in a sudden loss of control.

According to the automaker, a faulty caulking process is to blame and the issue is most likely to occur under heavier loads. And you thought loading all those mulch bags in your car wouldn't be a problem.

One of the goals of the agreement is to boost the recall completion rates for Takata airbag inflators, which need to be replaced by 2019.

It hasn't been a good year for diesel. There's the whole VW mess, a BlueTEC Mercedes-Benz lawsuit in California, and a GM Duramax lawsuit in Michigan. And now Mazda is issuing a recall for diesel engines outside the USA that stall, leak fuel, and catch on fire. Well, at least it's not emissions-related? Here are a few of the issues.

"Mazda says the fastening force of the injector mounting nut is faulty and can cause too much pressure on the injector gasket. If this condition occurs, the fuel blows through the cylinder head causing the engine oil to become carbonized and clog the oil strainer."

And then there's:

"The sealing performance of the fuel return hose can deteriorate and lead to cracks inside the hose, causing fuel to leak from the hose."

Oh yeah, then there's:

"The diesel engines can also stall because pressure in the cylinders and the closing force of the intake valves can decrease, catching soot between the intake valves and the valve seats. If this occurs, the engine will have poor compression and unstable rotation, causing the engine to stall."

As of right now, the recall doesn't affect US diesels but that could change.
Takata. Recall. Two words that I'm as tired of typing as you are sick of hearing. But here we are with another recall of 94,000 Mazda vehicles that have ticking time-bombs for airbags. Some vehicles are being recalled for the second time.

By now I'm guessing you've heard about the dangers of Takata airbags, but here's a quick recap:

Over time Takata airbag inflators are susceptible to moisture.

When that moisture mixes with the airbag's propellant, the inflators become unstable and can explode sending shrapnel throughout the cabin.

The problem is responsible for 11 deaths in the USA alone.

Mazda has now recalled more than 733,000 vehicles for this problem. Find out if yours is on the most recent list and make sure to scroll through all the different recall "zones."

Mazda has decided to recall an additional 3,700 B-Series trucks after Ford recalled the Ranger back in June. Both trucks are built on the same platform. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has broken this recall into different "zones" across the country. See the full list of recalled vehicles.

Takata's metal inflators are at risk of exploding because they don't contain a drying agent called desiccate. Over time, the ammonium nitrate inside the inflator can become unstable when exposed to heat and humidity. If they do explode during an airbag deployment, metal shrapnel shoots throughout the cabin, injuring or killing the people inside.

Mazda, like other automakers, doesn't have enough replacement parts to fix their vehicles. This is the largest recall in US history with 70 million cars affected and parts are scarce.

Owners should get an initial recall notice in the mail, and then another when parts become available.

Mazda’s L-series engines have a reputation of variable vale timing (VVT) defects that can cause oil leaks, excessive smoke out of the tailpipe, loose timing chains, and catastrophic engine failure. Other than that they're great. Unfortunately a judge has granted a motion to dismiss a VVT lawsuit after Mazda argued their extended warranty terms are clear:

The new Mazda3 is unsafe to drive, unsafe to sell and possibly even unsafe to look at. OK, well ... that last one is a stretch, but Mazda is so concerned about a fire risk that they are telling owners to park their cars and dealers to stop selling them immediately. Yikes – so what's the deal?

The cars have a defect in the gas shut-off valve that can allow fuel to enter a charcoal emissions canister. Once too much fuel enters that canister, it can leak out. Anytime there's a fuel leak near a heat source the chances of your car turning into a Mazdakabob is greatly increased.

The recalled cars include any 2015-16 Mazda3 built between May 21, 2015 and August 24, 2015. That's roughly 19,000 cars.

The recall is expected to begin sometime in October 2015. Owners are being asked to call Mazda to arrange a tow to the dealership and to schedule a rental vehicle.

Dealers will inspect the car's fuel shut-off valve and replace it if needed.

Once again, owners are being told not to drive their cars and to instead call Mazda to arrange a tow and a rental car if needed.

"Mazda says the extended warranty notice is clear that “if the noise is caused by poor vehicle maintenance (insufficient oil changes or using engine oil of viscosity lower than 5W-30), this warranty extension does not apply.” Without maintenance records, Mazda says there is no way to know if the car was properly maintained."

Sure, let me just dig up every oil change receipt for you

On the surface, that might seem reasonable. But according to owners all it takes is one missing oil change receipt to miss out on warranty coverage. Additionally, owners say they were offered less help because they had oil changes done at a local shop rather than a certified dealer.

It's even worse if they did their own changes at home:

"Two days later we received a call from the dealer and were informed there was excessive sludge and they would need to see receipts from where we changed our oil. We performed our own oil changes and did not keep receipts from the auto parts store where we purchased the oil.

Additionally, Mazda wants any claims of consumer fraud, breach of implied warranty and concealment to all be dismissed.

The Mazda program will extend the warranty coverage for brake booster repairs to unlimited time and mileage if the repairs are performed between March 31, 2014 and March 31, 2015. If you miss that deadline and have the repairs done after March 31, 2015, the warranty is extended to 7 years or 90,000 miles.

In other words, if you ever feel like your 2010-11 CX-9 brake pedal is hard to push, feels spongy or hisses at you -- get it repaired, ideally before the end of March next year!

We have more information on those spongy, hissing brakes.

Power Steering Failure Recall for 33,000 Tribute SUVs

Mazda is recalling 33,000 Mazda Tribute SUVs for a problem that could disable the electric power steering. Authorized dealers will need to either update the power steering control module's software or replace the module entirely, starting in July.

The 2008-11 Mazda Tribute is susceptible to losing its power steering because of problems in its torque sensor. Without that steering assistance, your car becomes as hard to steer at slow speeds as an old Cadillac through mud -- take it from me, it's not fun.

Mazda blames the problem on some defective software inside the power steering control module. The recall will involve updating that module's software or, if needed, replacing it entirely. Mazda expects this all to start in July.

In the meantime, concerned owners can contact them at 248-295-7895 and reference recall number 7614E. In the other meantime, do whatever it is one does with mean time.

More Fire Risks for the Mazda6 (But This Time It's Not Spiders)

For the second time in less than a month, Mazda is recalling the Mazda6 because of a fire risk. At least it's not because of a spider infestation this time! Small victories.

The auto-shutoff valve is allowing too much fuel to get into the Mazda6's gas tank when filling up. With a large enough temperature change the fuel can expand, pass into the charcoal canister and eventually drip out of the vapor vent line. Whether it's a drip or a splash -- once fuel starts spilling out and coming in contact with hot surfaces, it's a very bad thing.

Luckily, Mazda engineers have come up with a countermeasure to reduce the amount of fuel that can enter the tank before the auto-shutoff activates. Bring the heat, El Niño.

The issue affects the 2014 Mazda6 with the 2.5-liter SkyActiv engine -- about 19,000 vehicles in total.

Let's face it, car problems are annoying. Have you ever slammed the car door out of frustration? I certainly have. And while it seemed like a good idea at the time, it solved exactly zero issues.

But you know what could actually get something accomplished? Filing a class-action lawsuit. Granted, you'd have to be pretty darn frustrated to get to that point -- but that's exactly where a 2004 Mazda RX-8 found herself after her multiple engine flooding problems before it finally died.

Christina Paschal, represented by Knapp Peterson & Clarke[1] and lemon-law advocate Robert L. Starr[2], says Mazda knows of a defect with the rotary engines in the 2004-2008 RX-8 and is failing to honor its warranties.

In Paschal's case, she says Mazda wouldn't pay for the spark plugs following an engine failure -- despite knowing it's part of the problem -- but did pay for new ignition coils. She's not alone. According to the lawsuit, Mazda refused to pay for spark plugs in almost half of 69,249 warranty claims.

The lawsuit claims Mazda knows about this specific problem based on a technical service bulletin (TSB) sent to dealers in 2004. The lawsuit currently includes an estimated 50,000 Mazda RX-8 cars purchased in California between 2004 and 2008. However it's possible the lawsuit could extend to owners in other states, that's where you come in...

Corrosion in the lower control arm is prompting a recall of 109,000 Tribute SUVs from the 2001-2004 model years. The corrosion can cause the control arms to fracture which -- as the name implies -- would make it very difficult to control your vehicle.

As is often the case, corrosion recalls like this are limited to vehicles sold or currently registered in specific states where road salt is heavily used. As if this winter hasn't been bad enough for the people of: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Mazda will install a reinforced cross-brace to prevent fracturing, problem is those parts just aren't available yet. In the meantime, concerned owners who want their vehicles inspected can bring them in to a dealer. If any fractures are found, Mazda will provide a rental until the parts are ready.

The recalled vehicles include the 2014 Mazda3 and the 2014-15 Mazda6 with both a 2.5L engine and the regenerative engine braking system. The PCM will need to be reprogrammed and the recall should begin in late April, 2014.
